In 1960s rural Appalachia, a determined mother refuses to accept the death of her coal mining town as she struggles to put together a birthday party for her son and family.
North is a period drama directed by Timur Almazov, co-written with Sydney Lawson and starring Clare Severinghaus, John David Williams and Rebecca Klingler. Made as his thesis film at the AFI Conservatory, it takes place during the Hillbilly Highway — a period when millions of rural Appalachians moved north to escape economic hardship. It’s a story about the death of a place, and how certain things can’t be fixed, no matter how much we love them.
